LeROY J. CALISE, 59, of Sack Street, a retired lieutenant in the North Providence Fire Department, died Tuesday at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital.

Born in North Providence, a son of the late Vito G. Calise and Gertrude (Stedford) Calise-Dunne, he was a lifelong resident of the town. Mr. Calise became one of the original 10 firefighters in the town Fire Department when he was 20.

He was hired when the department became permanent, in 1971, and had been head mechanic before retiring in 1991 as a lieutenant.

He had been a volunteer at the Lymansville Crime Prevention Association since 1995, serving on its board of directors for six years.

Mr. Calise volunteered with the Knights of Columbus as a non-member for their annual Tootsie Roll Drive for four years, and was recently honored for his contributions to the community.

He was a member of the Permanent Firefighters Retirement Association, a life member of Chilly Willy's, and a full member of Lynne's Restaurant Crew.

He leaves a brother, A.V. Danny Calise of Foster; a sister, Maria L. Martinelli of North Providence; and several nieces and nephews, and 13 great-nieces and great-nephews. He was the brother of the late Madeline Calise.

The funeral will be held tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. from Elliott M. Robbins Chapel, 2251 Mineral Spring Ave., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 in St. Lawrence Church, 624 Woonasquatucket Ave. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park, Johnston.
